Not even April, but October: forecasters predict snow and frost

The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the city of Moscow informed residents and visitors of the capital about the impending frosts that will begin the week.

“From May 12 to 14, frosts of -5… 0 °C are expected in some places in Moscow during the night and morning hours,” the emergency warning says.

Muscovites are urged to avoid sudden maneuvers on the roads, not to overload electrical networks by using electric heaters, and not to leave them unattended.

The new week will begin not only with night frosts, but also with cool damp weather. Rain is expected in places, which will turn into wet snow.

“The beginning of the week will resemble not the month of May, but the classic October,” noted leading specialist at the Phobos weather center Evgeny Tishkovets .

According to his forecast, on Monday night +1… +3 degrees is expected in Moscow, -1… +4 in the region, and during the day the air will warm up to +6… +8 and +4… +9 °C respectively. This is 10-11 degrees below the climatic norm, which corresponds to the indicators of mid-autumn.

Precipitation in the form of snow is being carried by the rear part of a cold cyclone, the center of which shifted from the south to the west of the Kostroma region on the morning of May 11. According to the forecast of weather forecaster Mikhail Leus , this cyclone will bring precipitation with wet snow to the Moscow region by the evening.

The Phobos center specified that frosts will be replaced by rains, which will be observed throughout the territory of Central Russia. The average temperature will rise by 1-2 degrees daily, but it is premature to talk about the return of warmth. In the second half of the week, the weather will improve, a warm southern wind will blow, which will disperse the clouds, and the air will warm up to +15 ... +17 degrees.

The head of the Meteo forecasting center, Alexander Shuvalov, believes that warming will come to the capital region, but will be spread out over time.

"Only by May 15 will the daytime temperature in the central zone gradually rise to 15 degrees. And the 20-degree mark will only be within the power of the May weather by the 20th of the month," the specialist said .

Scientific Director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center Roman Vilfand clarified in a conversation with TASS that even at the end of the week the temperature will be 3-4 degrees below normal.

"So far, beyond next Friday, there is no warmth that would be associated with warm May weather. At the beginning of the week, the temperature in the capital will be 9-11, then 10-15 degrees, and from Thursday the indicator will tend to the 15-degree mark. Nights are cold - from 0 to plus 5," he explained.

The situation in the Northern capital looks more optimistic, but snow is expected here in the near future, and on Monday night in the Leningrad Region frosts will hit in places. Black ice is predicted.

“So the warming is happening very slowly, but it is happening and already at the beginning of next week there will be more sun and the air will be able to warm up to +13… +15,” predicts weather forecaster Alexander Kolesov .

The expert clarified that one should not expect very warm weather to set in in mid-May, as was the case last year.

Vilfand noted that a negative temperature anomaly will be observed throughout the territory of European Russia in the coming days: somewhere around 4-7 degrees, on the Volga - 3-4 degrees. Shuvalov does not expect significant shifts in the next five days, nor the arrival of warmth.

"Summer warmth will only be in summer! Render to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's," Tishkovets emphasized.

The Meteonovosti news agency reports bad weather in the southern regions of European Russia. Atmospheric pressure will drop, a cold atmospheric front will bring heavy rains, thunderstorms, hail, gusty winds, which will be observed everywhere. In Krasnodar Krai, winds of up to 23 m/s are expected, in Kalmykia and Stavropol Krai - up to 25 m/s.

In the second half of the week, the cyclone will move to the north of the European part of Russia, and from the southwest, the ridge of the Mediterranean anticyclone will come, which will bring warming. At the same time, the probability of short-term rains will remain.

Let us recall that earlier forecasters expected the temperature background to return to normal in the second ten-day period of May, and the end of the month, according to previous forecasts, was supposed to be abnormally warm, compensating for the cold start. The weather, apparently, decided to make its own adjustments - it is unlikely that the thermometers will return to standard indicators until the third ten-day period.
