«Our main focus is to represent Love Tiles with pride»

Carlos Fernandes is the sports director of the Love Tiles Sports Cycling Team, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It is, above all, the passion for two wheels and friendship that, during this period, has “fed” the largest national amateur cycling team, which continues to grow year after year. It currently has more than 330 members, which is why it never goes unnoticed in the many races it takes part in, and not just because it is almost always the biggest “spot” in the peloton. During these ten years, there have been countless victories and podium places achieved by cyclists who proudly compete in the colours of the Aveiro team. The success, national and international, the growth, but above all the friendships created, are aspects highlighted by Carlos Fernandes, who predicts an even better future for a project that is already a reference.

Aveiro Diary: Ten years of Love Tiles Sports Cycling Team. Tell us how it all began... Carlos Fernandes: I could say that it all started with a dream and passion. A passion for two wheels, team spirit and a huge desire to cycle and give people the same feeling we have for cycling. We never intended to make this project the biggest of all, but we certainly always wanted our athletes to find a reason to unite here. Ten years later, that essence remains, but with many more miles under our belts!

How do you assess these last ten years? The assessment is made with emotion and overcoming. These were years of achievements, friendship, many victories and even more stories. We started with a very small group and we grew, we participated in more and more events, to the point that we were almost always the largest group in the events as a team. Even during the years of the pandemic, we did not slow down and managed to mobilize our athletes to participate, each from their own home, in solidarity initiatives. We also invested in internationalization, with participation in international events. Our events and videos of the new equipment began to be a moment of great expectation for the athletes and the friendship that united us grew year after year. And the best part? We have only just begun.

At the moment, Love Tiles is one of the biggest amateur cycling teams in Portugal and Europe… In Portugal, it is confirmed that we are the biggest team, but we do not have this information in Europe. The number of athletes, the presence in events and the competitive spirit place us in a prominent place in the amateur squad and with each event, with each competition, we see that there are more and more of us.
