President Donald Trump said he plans to send letters to US trading partners starting this Friday (4) to inform them about the imposition of punitive tariffs, as negotiations on the issue enter the final stretch.

“My inclination is to send a letter and tell them what tariff they’re going to pay,” Trump told reporters on Thursday (3). “It’s a lot easier.”

“We will be sending out some letters, probably starting tomorrow,” he added Friday.

Trump made the comments days before punitive tariffs are set to go into effect on July 9 on dozens of countries from Taiwan to the European Union.

In early April, Trump shook up global trade by announcing his so-called “reciprocal” tariffs on the rest of the world: a universal minimum tariff of 10%, which goes up to 50% for countries that export more to the United States than they import in American goods.

Faced with stupor and panic in the financial markets, the Republican leader suspended his highest customs tariffs for 90 days, to make way for trade negotiations with each of the parties involved.

US officials indicate that a series of trade agreements could be announced in the coming days.

So far, the Trump administration has only unveiled deals with the UK and Vietnam. In addition, Washington and Beijing have agreed to temporarily reduce the high tariffs they have imposed on each other.
