Renewables supply more than 83% of electricity in Portugal in April

Portugal among European leaders in renewable electricity production
During the month of April, Portugal recorded 83.3% of electricity coming from renewable sources , with emphasis on hydroelectric power (41.1%) and wind power (27.3%). These data were revealed in the most recent Renewable Electricity Bulletin from APREN – Portuguese Renewable Energy Association.
The impact goes beyond environmental sustainability. Around 4 million tons of CO₂ equivalent have been avoided since the beginning of the year, while the electricity production sector has emitted only 0.74 MtCO₂eq.
From January to April 2025, the incorporation of renewable energies avoided 878 million euros in energy imports , divided equally between natural gas and electricity.
This contribution highlights the role of renewables as a strategic axis to reduce external dependence and strengthen the national economy.
Between 1 January and 30 April, the average hourly price of electricity in MIBEL was €70.3/MWh , with negative lows of -€5/MWh and peaks of up to €197.3/MWh. Even so, there were 997 hours in which renewable production fully supplied national electricity consumption .
According to Pedro Amaral Jorge, CEO of APREN, “renewables are not only an environmental pillar, but also an economic one, bringing savings to consumers and reducing the CO₂ emissions bill”.
Portugal remains on the European podium when it comes to green electricity generation. With 82.2% of renewable energy accumulated up to April, the country is surpassed only by Norway (97.2%) and Denmark (83.3%).
APREN reinforces that, to take advantage of the full economic and environmental potential of clean electricity, it is essential to accelerate investment in electricity networks, storage and flexibility solutions.
