Oil workers announce two-day strike at Petrobras companies

Federations representing oil sector workers announced a new strike at Petrobras units on Thursday (15). The strike will take place on May 29 and 30, as a form of protest against the lack of progress in negotiations with the state-owned company's management.
The decision was made at a joint meeting of the Unified Federation of Oil Workers (FUP) and the National Federation of Oil Workers (FNP). According to the entities, the strike will begin at 7 am on the 29th and will last until 7 pm the following day. This will be the second warning strike of the year. The first took place in March, lasting 24 hours.
According to the federations, the strike is mainly motivated by the stagnation in negotiations on variable compensation for employees and by austerity measures adopted by Petrobras, even after a positive financial performance. In the first quarter of 2025, Petrobras recorded a net profit of R$35.2 billion and announced the distribution of R$11.72 billion in dividends to shareholders.
For workers, there is an inconsistency between the state-owned company's financial results and the internal management's cost-cutting stance, as indicated in recent statements by the company's president, Magda Chambriard.
Another point of tension is the concern about safety conditions in the company's operations. The organizations denounce the practice of underreporting workplace accidents and cited as an example the recent incident on the Cherne 1 platform in the Campos Basin (RJ). The unions demand greater rigor and transparency in the management of worker safety.
