Beyoncé and Jay-Z are one of entertainment’s most prominent power couples, but when it comes to their three children, they’ve always maintained their privacy. Their youngest and only son, Sir Carter, remains largely out of the spotlight, especially compared to his sisters, Blue Ivy and Rumi.

While Beyoncé occasionally shares glimpses of her son with the world, most details about Sir’s life are kept secret. Still, fans have been captivated by the rare moments when he does appear, eager to learn more about him. Below, everything to know about Sir.

Sir was born on June 13, 2017, alongside his twin sister, Rumi, in Los Angeles. He is the younger of the two, though they arrived during the same minute.

The twins joined their older sister, Blue Ivy Carter, who was born in 2012 and has since become a budding cultural figure in her own right. The twins arrived after what Beyoncé later revealed was a challenging pregnancy, complicated by preeclampsia.

Sir’s name was confirmed when Beyoncé shared the twins’ first photo one month after their birth on Instagram, a post that broke social media records at the time. In August 2017, Jay-Z appeared on the Rap Radar podcast and spoke about Sir’s name. “Sir was like, man, come out the gate,” the rapper said. “He carries himself like that. He just came out, like, Sir.”

Since welcoming their twins, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have made privacy a cornerstone of their parenting. Both artists have been deliberate in how much of their children’s lives they share, limiting red carpet appearances and keeping details such as schooling and daily routines out of the public eye.

But Beyoncé has opened up about her parenting goals. In a 2018 essay for Vogue, she said of her son, “I want him to know that he can be strong and brave but that he can also be sensitive and kind. I want my son to have a high emotional IQ where he is free to be caring, truthful, and honest. It’s everything a woman wants in a man, and yet we don’t teach it to our boys.”

She added, “I hope to teach my son not to fall victim to what the internet says he should be or how he should love. I want to create better representations for him so he is allowed to reach his full potential as a man, and to teach him that the real magic he possesses in the world is the power to affirm his own existence.”

In her 2023 documentary film, Renaissance, Beyoncé spoke more about motherhood, saying, “My first job is my children, and they’re my first priority so if someone gets bitten by a spider or [any other] of the crazy things that happened while I was on this tour, that’s when my real job starts.” She also confirmed that she still drops them off at school and takes them shopping for their first day of school—“all of the things that mothers do,” she said, per Hello!.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have not spoken at length about their son’s personality. But Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, shared in an October 2025 interview with Hello! that Sir is “very laid back and not into the spotlight.” Last year, the matriarch also spoke with E! News and described her grandson as “very, very smart” and “very quiet.” She added that he’s into “the numbers stuff, so he’s not into fashion as much.”

Sir has made only a handful of public appearances since his birth. In 2019, he was briefly featured in Beyoncé’s documentary, Homecoming. That year, he was also in Beyoncé Presents: Making The Gift, a 2019 documentary about the creation of the singer’s album, The Lion King: The Gift, which was released alongside Disney’s live-action remake of the classic movie.

In 2020, Sir appeared in his mom’s visual album, Black Is King, which the singer dedicated to him, writing, “To my son, Sir Carter, and to all our sons and daughters, the sun and the moon bow for you.” The following year, he made a cameo in Beyoncé’s Ivy Park Rodeo Kids campaign video.

Most recently, Sir appeared in a short video clip played during the shows on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour. In the footage, he smiled alongside his siblings in home video-style snippets projected during his mother’s performance.

In her recent interview with Hello!, Knowles said she’s not sure if her grandson would join his mom and sisters onstage in future shows since he prefers to stay out of the spotlight. But she didn’t completely rule out the possibility: “We’ll see,” Knowles added.
