Families in Arouca ask for support to restore water service after fires

Around fifty families in the municipality of Arouca, in the district of Aveiro, have already requested support from the local authority to restore drinking water connections destroyed by the violent forest fire that raged through the region in the last week of July.
According to a source at the Arouca City Council, the municipal investment to purchase necessary pipes and materials has already exceeded €30,000. The support is intended for families whose homes are not connected to the public water supply network, also covering connections for agricultural purposes.
The parishes affected include Alvarenga, Santa Eulália, Tropeço, Union of Parishes of Canelas and Espiunca, and Union of Parishes of Arouca and Burgo.
The fire, which started on July 28th, consumed approximately 4,000 hectares of forest. "The municipality's main concern, from the outset, was to ensure rapid support measures for the most affected populations, especially regarding the restoration of the water supply," stated Margarida Belém, mayor of Arouca. The mayor signed an exceptional order to ensure the municipality's immediate response, allowing the delivery of pipes to families deprived of this essential resource.
The damage caused by the fire included the partial destruction of the Paiva Walkways - one of the municipality's main tourist attractions and a source of revenue - as well as damage to agricultural outbuildings, a vacant house and two homes.
Arouca City Council continues to receive requests for support and reiterates its willingness to assist all families affected by this disaster.
