PGE MKS El-Volt Lublin won the 3rd Edward Jankowski Memorial
Edward Jankowski, also known as "Edzio," can only be described in superlatives. He was a man who worked for Montex, SPR, and MKS for over 25 years. Jankowski joined the Lublin club in 1996. He served as assistant coach, and later, for many years, he also managed the Polish national team on his own.
Under his leadership, they regained the Polish Championship title in 2005. In total, he won the Polish Championship gold medal five times as head coach. Under Jankowski's leadership, the Lublin women's team also had the opportunity to compete in the Champions League. During the 2020/2021 season, the experienced coach worked with MKS as a goalkeeping coach. He also coached clubs in Jelenia Góra (2001-2003) and Koszalin (2014-2016). Jankowski also collaborated with coaches of the senior women's national team, particularly in their work with goalkeepers. He participated in this role at the 2005 World Championships and was awarded the ZPRP Diamond Badge.
For fans, the memorial match was their first opportunity to see the new version of PGE MKS El-Volt Lublin. And the first test, against Slovakia's Iuventa Michalovce, proved impressive. The Polish runners-up quickly imposed their own rules and led 10-5 after fifteen minutes. However, the visitors later recovered significantly, losing only 13-14. Paweł Tetelewski, however, took a timeout and quickly got his players playing much better. As a result, the home team was ahead 21-16 at halftime.
After the break, the Lublin team simply controlled the score, comfortably leading by a few goals. Patricia Lima played excellently, and Maria Prieto O'Mullony finished many of her moves, scoring a total of seven goals. Daria Szynkaruk was also worth mentioning. The Lublin winger added six goals. Ultimately, MKS El-Volt Lublin won 32-25 and faced Sośnica Gliwice, which defeated Energa Start Elbląg 37-35 on Friday.
The match against Gliwice was also quite one-sided, although Sośnica managed to maintain contact with the hosts in the first quarter. However, when Gliwice received two penalties, PGE MKS El-Volt clearly broke away from their opponents and went into the break leading 19-12. The second half, however, was dominated by Daria Szynkaruk's brilliance. The Lublin winger literally lit up the court, running relentlessly from one end of the court to the other. She made steal after steal, rarely made mistakes in attack, and was an excellent penalty shooter. She finished the match with nine goals, and the Lublin team won 40-27. However, Maria Prieto O'Mullony was named the Lublin MVP.
