In Japan, 11,921 cases of whooping cough have been recorded since the beginning of 2025, more than twice as many as in the whole of 2024, NHK reported, citing data from medical services. The latest statistics are particularly worrying: more than 2,100 new infections in just one week at the end of April.

Data from the Japan Institute for Health Security (JIHS) show that the weekly number of patients (up to April 27) was the highest since 2018, when the current recording method began.
It was also noted that for the past five weeks, new records of cases have been recorded without interruption. The most - 142 cases - were recorded in the prefectures of Tokyo and Fukuoka.
The Japanese Pediatric Society appeals to parents to vaccinate infants as soon as they turn two months old.
As NHK writes, in addition to severe disease and death, there are also reports of cases resistant to conventional antibacterial drugs.
Whooping cough is an infectious bacterial disease characterized by an intense and persistent cough, especially in children. It can be fatal for infants up to six months of age.
