Switzerland reopens its embassy in Tehran, will represent US and Iranian interests

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAE) announced that its embassy in the Iranian capital Tehran reopened today.
The mission was closed on June 20 after a series of bombings by Israeli aircraft, and the diplomatic staff were evacuated to the country.
Swiss Ambassador Nadine Olivieri Lozano and a small team of her colleagues reached Tehran by land through Azerbaijan.
- The decision to reopen the embassy was made after an analysis of the geopolitical situation and after bilateral consultations with Iran and the United States, whose interests Switzerland represents as a so-called caring country - the DFAE wrote in a statement.
Following the severance of diplomatic relations between the United States and Iran in 1980, Switzerland has represented the United States in its contacts with Iran.
Under the bilateral agreement with Iran, it plays an identical role in that country's relations with the American administration of successive presidents.
The opening of the embassy is an important signal that Iran and the United States may soon resume talks on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Switzerland, for its part, has identified Geneva as the venue for future negotiations.
