Greek islands are the most crowded tourist region in the EU

The Greek islands in the southern Aegean Sea were the most crowded tourist destination in the European Union in 2023, according to a Thursday report by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
In the Greek region of the South Aegean Islands, including Mykonos and Rhodes , 117 tourist overnight stays per capita were recorded in 2023. Calculating tourist crowds, this is the highest figure in the European Union.
Another Greek region, the Ionian Islands, including Corfu and Ithaca, ranked second in the EU. In 2023, there were 98 tourist overnight stays per capita on this archipelago.
AdvertisementThe top places in the ranking of the German Statistical Office were also taken by the Italian South Tyrol (68 overnight stays per capita), the Croatian Adriatic coast (67) and the Spanish Balearic Islands (57).
In Germany, the most overnight stays per capita were booked by tourists in 2023 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (18 per capita).
The German Statistical Office reports that the lowest tourist traffic intensity was recorded in the Masovian Voivodeship (excluding Warsaw), the Opole Voivodeship, and Muntenia in Romania (excluding Bucharest). In each of these cases, there was less than one tourist overnight stay per resident per year.
In absolute numbers, the most popular travel destination in Europe in 2023 was the Spanish Canary Islands, with 95.6 million overnight stays booked. This was followed by the Croatian Adriatic coast (87.3 million overnight stays) and Catalonia (85.6 million). (PAP)
