Łódź lost the most residents among cities with county rights, according to the latest data from the Central Statistical Office. Poland's population decreased by over 140,000 people. Analysts examined which cities experienced the greatest population loss.
The Central Statistical Office recently published a study entitled "Area and population by territory in 2025." The latest information on Poland's demographics is not encouraging.
From January 2, 2024, to January 1, 2025, Poland's population decreased by 147,421 people. Declines are visible at the voivodeship, county, and municipal levels. Changes are also visible in cities.
Central Statistical Office. Urban population. The largest decline was in Łódź.The Central Statistical Office (GUS) calculated a decline in urban population over the same period as above. In 61 of the 66 cities with county rights, the number declined.
Łódź lost the most inhabitants (-6,322 people). In turn, Bydgoszcz lost 2,391 people and Szczecin 2,360 people. Kraków, Warsaw and Rzeszów, for example, have more inhabitants.

The Central Statistical Office also calculated the largest percentage declines. Wałbrzych has a 1.5% decrease in population, while Chełm, Przemyśl, Sopot, and Konin have each decreased by 1.4%.
The population in all Polish cities decreased by a total of 127,470 people compared to January 1, 2024. This represents a decrease of 0.6%.
Central Statistical Office. Fewer inhabitants in poviats and communesDeclines were also recorded in smaller units. In Kłodzko County (Lower Silesian Voivodeship), the number of residents decreased by 1,709 people, and in Inowrocław County (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship) by 1,555 people.
Poznań County gained 5,620 more residents. Wrocław County recorded 3,957 more people, and Piaseczno County (Masovian Voivodeship) 2,650 more people.
In 1,951 municipalities, the number of inhabitants decreased. This represents 78.8% of all municipalities in Poland.
