Catastrophic storms struck much of the eastern and central United States on Wednesday. One person died and 13 were injured in a lightning strike, including children.

A tragic weather incident occurred in New Jersey this evening. A lightning strike struck a group of people at an archery range . Jackson Township Police Chief Matthew D. Kunz reported that their injuries included burns and non-specific complaints of malaise . A 61-year-old man was killed.

"Paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on one of the injured people after emergency services were called at approximately 7:13 p.m. (1:13 a.m. Thursday, Polish time). The other person was unconscious but regained consciousness," Kunz told NBC News.

According to archery club president Jerry Mindurski , at least four of the injured were children who were taken to the hospital with burns. Three adult instructors were also taken to a medical facility.

Dangerous weather situation in the United States

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of New Jersey Wednesday evening, ABC News reported. Flood warnings were in effect for the northwest and central parts of the state.

Forecasters are predicting further heavy rainfall, which could worsen the deadly flooding that occurred earlier this week . On Monday, two people died in New Jersey when the rising waters of the Cedar Brook River swept away their car. Meanwhile, in New York City, water surged into subway stations and flooded numerous roads. Flash flood warnings were in effect for all five boroughs.

"If you live in a basement apartment, stay alert. Flash floods can occur unexpectedly, even at night," the New York Department of Emergency Management said in an official statement.
