Investigators launch offensive against Matecki? Indictments filed

According to information provided by the National Prosecutor's Office, the indictment was filed with the Szczecin-Centrum District Court in Szczecin on July 18, 2025. It concerns three former directors of the State Forests: Michał C., Józef K., and Andrzej Sz.
"The prosecutor of Investigative Team No. 2 of the National Prosecutor's Office has filed an indictment with the Szczecin-Centrum District Court in Szczecin against three former directors of the State Forests, i.e. Michał C., Józef K. and Andrzej Sz., accused of exceeding their authority by fictitiously employing Dariusz Matecki at the State Forests Information Center and the Regional Directorate of the State Forests in Szczecin," the National Prosecutor's Office said in a statement published on the X platform on Tuesday.
Investigators claim that Matecki's employment was sham and unrelated to his actual performance of professional duties. This resulted in the unjustified expenditure of public funds.
Dariusz Matecki's case is still openAlthough the former directors of the State Forests have been indicted, the investigation into Dariusz Matecki himself is still ongoing. According to the National Prosecutor's Office, the politician has been charged with six counts, four of which concern misappropriation of property from the Justice Fund.
"The investigation into the suspect Dariusz Matecki continues. Dariusz Matecki has been charged with a total of six counts, including four related to misappropriation of property from the Justice Fund," the prosecutor's office said.
Matecki, a former Solidarna Polska activist and current PiS MP, has previously appeared in the context of controversy surrounding the public funding of initiatives. The new allegations could have serious political and legal consequences for his future career.
The accused plead not guiltyThe former directors of the State Forests were questioned by investigators many months ago. All three pleaded not guilty but provided extensive testimony. The prosecutor's office then decided to impose preventive measures.
The measures imposed included police supervision, a ban on contacting the indicated persons, a ban on leaving the country and a financial guarantee of PLN 50,000.
Supreme Audit Office report: millions spent illegallyThe image of the State Forests is also being undermined by a report from the Supreme Audit Office, which reveals massive irregularities in the management of public funds in 2022 and 2023. The document highlights, among other things, unjustified expenditures on advertising in media favorable to the previous government, trips to election meetings, and even paying for an audience with the Pope and the establishment of orchards named after John Paul II.
The Supreme Audit Office (NIK) estimates that a total of over PLN 30 million may have been misappropriated during the period under review. Among the most absurd expenses, it cited thousands of zlotys earmarked for "blessings of seedlings" that were to be consecrated as part of religious forest-planting ceremonies.
Additionally, the report shows that some of the equipment allegedly purchased to help Ukraine disappeared without a trace and its fate remains unknown.
