Action Without Words: Police Arrest a Street Mime
Date created:
Dressed in black, with white faces and theatrical movements, two mimes walked across a pedestrian crossing in Zawiercie. But what was supposed to be a street art show turned into a police intervention. As it turned out, one of the mimes was wanted by a court in Szczecin.
An unusual arrest took place on Wednesday, July 16th, in Zawiercie, Silesia. Police officers decided to question two men in disguise. It turned out they were Romanian citizens and street performers.
"It was a routine preventative check; we wanted to see who was hiding under the mask," Deputy Commissioner Marta Wnuk from the Zawiercie District Police Headquarters told "Fakt." "One of the men was more talkative, the other less so... as if he was getting into character. It turned out the 24-year-old was a wanted man," the press officer added.
They entered the data into the database. Everything came to light. When officers checked their details in the police database, it was discovered that one of them was wanted by a court in Szczecin for a 30-day prison sentence. It turned out that this was a disciplinary penalty, which was later converted to arrest due to failure to pay a fine. The 24-year-old was taken to police custody.
The situation took an even more interesting turn when the second mime—instead of disappearing into the crowd, as in the classic gag—paid a 1,500 złoty fine to buy out his colleague. This possibility was allowed by the court's ruling.
Silesian officers, not without humor, called the entire intervention: "Detained Despite Everything."
