FC Groningen wins big against Heracles in battle for ninth place


FC Groningen has seriously entered the battle for the play-offs for European football with a 4-1 home win over Heracles Almelo. The team of trainer Dick Lukkien rises to ninth place, with the same number of points as Heracles, which has dropped to tenth place. Numbers 5 to 9 will play the play-offs next month for a ticket to the preliminary rounds of the Conference League.
Former Heracles defender Marco Rente put FC Groningen ahead in the fourth minute after a beautiful assist from Luciano Valente. The 2-0 was scored after fifteen minutes by Jorg Schreuders, who found the net with a hard shot. After losing the ball in the Groningen midfield, Thomas Bruns (ex-FC Groningen) scored the connecting goal with a shot in the far corner.
Groningen also scored early in the second half, from a penalty by Leandro Bacuna. The 4-1 was an own goal by Brian De Keersmaecker, after a shot on the post by Valente.
In addition to Groningen and Heracles (35 points), Sparta Rotterdam (34) also has a good chance in the battle for ninth place.
