BAGHDAD (ANP/RTR) - Graham Arnold will start as national coach of the Iraqi national football team. The former Roda JC and NAC Breda player wants to lead the national team to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

According to an Iraqi Football Association executive, Arnold will succeed Jesús Casas, the Spaniard who was sacked in March after a defeat to Palestine. The 61-year-old Arnold, born in Sydney, led Australia to the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

Iraq will play two important matches in the World Cup qualifiers next month. The team will host South Korea on June 5 and play Jordan five days later. Iraq has only played in one World Cup and lost all three group matches in 1986.

South Korea tops the World Cup qualifying group, followed by Jordan and Iraq. The top two teams qualify directly for the World Cup.
