Valentina Letelier gave Mexico its fifth medal at the World Games held in Chengdu, China. In a grueling competition, the speed skater took bronze in the 15,000-meter elimination event.
The selected athlete achieved a time of 28:22.444 minutes to occupy third place on a podium completed by Colombian Gabriela Rueda, gold with 28:20.317, and Frenchwoman Marin Lefeuvre, silver with 28:20.588.
Letelier served as one of the national delegation's strong suits. The athlete arrived in Asia aiming to reach the podium, and she achieved her goal with a smart strategy. Although she was born in Chile, the skater decided to compete for Mexico and represent Nuevo León.
Tomorrow, she'll look to expand her record in China when she competes in the 5,000 meters and the 1,000-meter sprint . She'll conclude her participation with the 10,000-meter elimination race.
Fellow Mexican Carlos Monsivais finished second in his 100-meter sprint semifinal heat and failed to advance to the grand final. This morning, Manuel Cisneros and José Moreno placed third in the Ju Jitsu duo with physical limitations event, securing Mexico's fourth medal in Chengdu.
Paola Longoria advances
World number one-ranked racquetball player Paola Longoria had no problems in her World Games debut. The multi-time international medalist, seeking her fourth consecutive gold medal at the event, defeated Yuan Wang 11-1, 11-2, 11-2 in the round of 32 and will face Frederique Lambert in the next round.
