Seattle. The Toronto Blue Jays unleashed their offensive power by defeating the Seattle Mariners 13-4 last night to close the gap to 2-1 in the American League Championship Series. Mexican Alejandro Kirk contributed to his team's victory by hitting a three-run home run, in a game where the Canadian team hit five home runs.
In the first inning, Julio Rodriguez's home run off Shane Bieber put the Mariners ahead and sparked speculation of a series sweep, but Andres Gimenez sparked the comeback with a two-run homer that tied the game in a five-run third inning off George Kirby.
The Tijuana native hit a home run in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 12-2 and virtually seal the match.
“We've had some bad luck in a few games; we were hitting the ball well and it didn't drop. Today things worked out, and thank God we scored a lot of runs,” the Mexican declared. Kirk, Giménez, George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Addison Barger were the Blue Jays' power hitters, hitting five home runs in the game.
Guerrero had four hits and was one triple away from the cycle after going 0-for-7 in the first two games of the series, which the Blue Jays lost at home. Mexican Randy Arozarena and American Cal Raleigh homered in the eighth inning to give the home crowd at T-Mobile Park hope for a possible comeback, but it didn't materialize.
According to ESPN, the eight home runs between the two teams are the most recorded in a postseason game in Major League history.
Despite the win, the Blue Jays still trail in the series and must win one of their next two games to secure their return to Toronto. The fourth meeting between the two teams will take place today.
The Canadian national team is expected to send pitcher Max Scherzer to the mound, while the Mariners will place their trust in Dominican Luis Castillo.
