A new story is being written in Kukulcán Park.

A new story is being written in Kukulcán Park.

When César Valdez threw the first pitch at 9 p.m., a story began to be written at the renovated Kukulcán Park. Everyone hopes it will be a long-lasting one, with sacrifices that will lead to success.

Matías Carrillo remembered a time, back in 1984, when he hit a great home run to the last rows of seats in right field, when he was one of the young stars of the then Tigres Capitalinos of Don Alejo Peralta.

“And they beat us that year, here at Kukulcán… They were champions. And now, here again with a new park,” says the “Coyote of Macapul.” “It feels really good, well, put it that way: really good, to be back in this park feeling brand new.”

Matías, one of the greatest Mexican baseball players of all time, led the Bravos de León team for this season's opening series in Mérida, and also for the stadium's reopening. The fans gave the Sinaloa native a standing ovation on a night of great ovations, including those received by Yoaner Negrín, Art Charles, "Pepón" Juárez, Yadir Drake, who received the loudest applause among the players, and Oswaldo Morejón, one of the most emblematic Yucatecan players of the recent generation.

Valdez, considered the ace of the rotation, threw a slider to Jimmy Kerrigan, who fouled out a thunderous strike to third. The moment we've been waiting for. Baseball is back.— Gaspar Silveira Malaver
