The Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strengthen food sovereignty with new agreements.

Food sovereignty in Mexico has taken center stage on the new government's agenda. In an important step toward that goal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) signed two international technical and scientific cooperation agreements. These actions are part of the National Food Sovereignty Program promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and aligned with Plan Mexico .

The agreements were signed by Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente , the Minister of Agriculture Julio Berdegué Sacristán , the director of AMEXCID , Alejandra del Moral Vela , and the director of Science and Innovation at CIMMYT , Sarah Hearne .

The first is the Framework Agreement for International Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries (SADER). The second is the Specific Cooperation Agreement between the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) .

Both documents establish the foundation for promoting scientific and technological development in the Mexican countryside, with the goal of achieving food self-sufficiency and improving the quality of life of rural producers. This cooperation comes at a crucial time, as the country faces climatic, economic, and social challenges that require coordinated solutions.

Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente emphasized that this effort is part of one of the key strategies to protect national sovereignty . He underscored the importance of supporting Mexican agricultural producers with a long-term vision that combines innovation with sustainable development.

"The country needs comprehensive responses to advance its development plans," he explained, noting that science and technology are fundamental tools for achieving the goals of Plan Mexico , especially in terms of food sovereignty and self-sufficiency .

For his part, Julio Berdegué Sacristán explained that international cooperation is essential to addressing current challenges in the agricultural sector, both in rural areas and on Mexico's coasts . This vision is directly linked to the so-called " Second Level of the Fourth Transformation ," which seeks to advance a policy of shared prosperity .

The official emphasized that coordination between secretariats not only strengthens national self-sufficiency but also contributes to the overall goal of promoting peace through economic and social development . In his words, this effort is not limited to the local level but has the potential to benefit farmers around the world .

One of the main results of the agreements is the implementation of the project "Advancing Towards Integrated Agri-Food Innovation Systems in Mexico," designed to strengthen agri-food systems in six states: Campeche, Chiapas, Guerrero, Michoacán, Morelos, and Puebla .

This plan includes:

  • Technical training at the local, state and national levels
  • Promoting sustainable and resilient agricultural practices
  • Application of scientific innovation in key crops such as corn and wheat
  • Strengthening the social fabric in rural communities

Thanks to the collaboration between AMEXCID and CIMMYT , this project will seek to improve agricultural yields and support the most vulnerable producers in the face of climate change and market volatility.

The signing of these agreements marks an important step forward in the current government's vision of achieving food sovereignty and security in Mexico . By combining efforts across different levels of government and international organizations, the country is preparing to face future challenges with a comprehensive strategy based on cooperation, knowledge, and inclusion.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has made it clear that her administration will seek to transform Mexico's rural areas from the ground up, with a focus on sustainable development , social justice, and productive self-sufficiency . These agreements are a clear sign that this transformation is already underway.
