Monreal's trip to Europe sparks Sheinbaum's message of humility

Ricardo Monreal's recent trip to Europe with his wife sparked a reaction that resonates beyond politics. During her traditional morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum uttered a phrase that many interpreted as a direct message: "Power is exercised with humility."
Although Sheinbaum avoided direct confrontations, her statement did not go unnoticed. “One important thing must always be said: power is exercised with humility, first and foremost, always,” she stated from the National Palace. The president also emphasized that, within the Fourth Transformation movement, the final evaluation always comes from the people.
"It's always the people who evaluate us. And we must keep that in mind," Sheinbaum insisted, taking a clear ethical stance regarding the public behavior of officials.
Ricardo Monreal, Morena's coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, posted a video on social media explaining the reasons for his trip: he celebrated 40 years of marriage and took advantage of the legislative recess to take a few days off.
“My wife and I planned these days off not only because we hadn't gone out in several years, but also because we're celebrating 40 years of marriage,” he explained.
He asserted that the trip was paid for with his own funds, denying that he had stayed in luxury hotels or used public funds. "We have the right to travel, and that's what we're doing," Monreal concluded in the video.
Although there's no evidence of irregularities, Monreal's trip is generating controversy within the movement. In a context where the Fourth Transformation has insisted on austerity, the actions of prominent figures are being scrutinized.
Sheinbaum, without disavowing Monreal, used the moment to reaffirm the principles of the Fourth Transformation: closeness to the people, simplicity, and responsibility. A stance that strengthens her narrative of an austere and ethically committed government.
The president also emphasized her respect for Monreal: "He has played a very important role leading the coordination of the Chamber of Deputies today," she said. However, she stressed that all officials must remember who they represent and what values underpin the movement.
Beyond the trip, what truly remained at the center of the debate was consistency with Morena's founding values. In a Mexico that demands transparency and closeness, Sheinbaum advocates for a narrative where power isn't flaunted, but rather exercised with humility.
