Barcelona gives itself a month to limit seasonal rentals

In a month and a half, Jaume Collboni (PSC) will have completed two years as mayor of Barcelona, and ten years since his arrival at the council. The municipal plenary session held this Friday showcased the complexity of local politics. Thanks to ERC and En Comú , Collboni avoided another round of criticism. However, he had to make several concessions to his partners.
Among them, voting in favor of a proposal from the Commons urging Collboni to definitively approve within one month an amendment to the General Metropolitan Plan (PGM) to put an end to seasonal rentals . This is a demand that the same coalition is putting forward in Parliament.
For its part, ERC secured approval for a renovation plan whose explanatory statement included the traditional rhetoric of the left. In the city, four out of five buildings predate 1980, and to prevent investment funds from "making money by evicting residents," an "ambitious" agenda will be implemented to ensure that residents "can stay in their homes." The goal is to renovate 25,000 apartments per year by 2050.
Another concession to En Comú and ERC was Collboni's commitment to speak with the Port of Barcelona to reduce the number of cruise terminals. This announcement is difficult to materialize since the terminals have already been awarded to different operators.
The plenary session also approved a new urban plan with more green areas in La Clota and a renovation of the 22@ technology district to build 238 public housing units, a municipal facility, and a pedestrianized path between Pere IV, Selva de Mar, Veneçuela, and Provençals streets.
