Abinader and Lula da Silva meet to discuss the crisis in Haiti.

President Luis Abinader and his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva , held a private meeting this Friday, in which they addressed the Haitian issue and the importance of the Brazil-Caribbean meeting so that, together, they can raise awareness among the international community about the crisis in the neighboring country.
The Presidency reported that Abinader explained to Lula the efforts the Dominican Republic is making to ensure that the Haiti crisis does not affect the country's security .
"They discussed the importance of the Brazil-Caribbean meeting on the Haitian issue, so that the international community can be jointly raised," the Presidency said.
Abinader participated in the Brazil-Caribbean Summit , convened by Lula to analyze the current situation in Haiti, especially the violence generated by armed gangs.
Cuba and the ten members of CARICOM also attended the conclave. Food security and climate change were also discussed at the meeting.
According to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti ( Binuh) , armed gangs, classified as terrorist groups by the Haitian Foreign Ministry, control several areas in the capital and other localities, generating terror among citizens, who are forced to abandon their homes and belongings to save their lives.
According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 2,680 people died in Haiti between January and May due to gang violence.

The leaders also discussed the possibility of several agreements that would benefit both nations .
"They discussed cooperation in security matters, strengthening diplomatic relations , trade , tourism, and aviation," the Presidency reported.
In addition to meeting with the Brazilian president, Abinader held bilateral meetings with Sergio Diaz-Granados , executive president of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF).
- The Dominican president also met with Ilan Golfajn , president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
Another important meeting of the president was with Mrs. Ma Amor Mottley , Prime Minister of Barbados , with whom he reviewed issues related to the Caribbean region and exchanged views on the Haitian crisis .
President Abinader was accompanied at these meetings by Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez and Ambassador to Brazil Robert Tanaka.
