Save Gas NOW: PROFECO Apps and Tips That Work 2025

The price of gasoline is a constant concern. We present apps endorsed by PROFECO to find the best prices and practical tips to make your car fuel efficient, benefiting your economy and the planet.

Fuel costs are one of the most significant expenses for motorists in Mexico. Every increase in the price of gasoline directly impacts household finances and the operating costs of many businesses. Fortunately, there are technological tools and driving habits that can help optimize fuel consumption, find the most competitive prices, and, as an added benefit, reduce our environmental footprint. The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) even supports applications designed to empower consumers in this area.

In the quest for fair prices and full liters, technology has become a great ally. Some apps stand out for offering useful and up-to-date information:

Liter x Liter (PROFECO):

This is the official app supported by PROFECO. Its main function is to display the prices per liter of gasoline (Magna, Premium) and diesel at gas stations near your location. It also allows users to view various tips and features.

Other Popular Apps (Waze, Google Maps): Although their primary function isn't exclusively comparing gas prices, navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps have incorporated features that display prices at gas stations along your route or in your area. This can be very useful for planning strategic stops and saving a few pesos per liter.

Fuelio / Simply Auto / My Car – Vehicle Manager / FillUp: There are other specialized apps that, while not all of them display prices (some focus more on performance and maintenance), help you keep a detailed record of mileage, refueling, and total expenses, and generate consumption statistics. Understanding your vehicle's actual performance is key to detecting mechanical problems that could be increasing your gas bills.

Beyond finding the best price, the way you drive and maintain your vehicle has a direct impact on how much gas it consumes. Here are some effective tips:

Smooth and Consistent Driving: Avoid harsh acceleration and sudden braking. Maintain a constant speed and anticipate stops. Aggressive driving can significantly increase fuel consumption. Using cruise control on the highway can help maintain an efficient speed.

Respect Speed Limits: Driving at very high speeds drastically reduces fuel efficiency. Most vehicles reach their optimum efficiency at moderate speeds (generally between 80-90 km/h, although this varies by model).

Engine Tune-Up: A well-tuned engine, with clean spark plugs and good air and fuel filters, burns fuel more efficiently.

Correct Tire Pressure: Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance and, therefore, fuel consumption. Check tire pressure regularly (ideally once a month and before long trips) according to your car manufacturer's specifications.

Reduce Unnecessary Weight: Don't use your car as storage. Carrying unnecessary heavy items increases engine strain and fuel consumption.

Routes: Use navigation apps to find the shortest routes or those with the least amount of traffic and traffic lights. Avoiding traffic jams and constant stops saves fuel.

Moderate Air Conditioning Use: Air conditioning consumes a considerable amount of engine power. Use it sparingly, especially in city driving at low speeds, where opening the windows can be more efficient.

Some gas station and supermarket chains offer loyalty programs or e-wallets that promise discounts or perks when fueling up. For example, in the past, programs like Payback allowed you to accumulate points at gas stations like Petro Seven or Gas Uribe, although this specific program has ceased to operate in Mexico. Oxxo Gas has its Spin Premia program, where points are accumulated for fuel purchases that can later be redeemed. Some supermarkets also offer fuel discounts for certain in-store purchases.

It's important to analyze the terms and conditions of these programs: the actual value of the points, the conditions for earning and redeeming them, and whether the base fuel prices at those stations are competitive. Sometimes, the savings may be marginal or tied to other expenses.

Saving gas not only benefits your personal finances but also has a positive impact on the environment by reducing polluting and greenhouse gas emissions. Adopting efficient driving habits and using available tools to make informed decisions are simple but powerful steps toward more responsible consumption.
