A recent study revealed that the 10,000-steps-a-day rule is one of the most effective ways to start physical activity. Therefore, experts suggest people start with this rule and then progress to other types of exercise depending on their specific characteristics.

Furthermore, experts suggest that any activity, no matter how small, already has positive effects. Thus, in the report, Matthew Ahmadi of the University of Sydney, along with other researchers, collected data from more than 70,000 users of the UK Biobank. According to El Economista, in this report, participants wore wrist accelerometers for a week to measure their physical activity level, specifically the number of steps they took daily, as well as the time they spent sitting, which averaged about 10 hours a day.

What were the results?

According to the study, several results were highlighted, including the discovery that between 9,000 and 10,000 steps per day were optimal for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease by 21% and the risk of premature death by 39%. "Any daily step count above the benchmark of 2,200 steps per day was associated with lower mortality and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, for both low and high sedentary time periods ," the researchers noted.
