Rooney Mara is nominated for an Ariel Award

A week ago, Rooney Mara's name was dropped by the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. The reason was that he simply didn't appear in the nominations for the Ariel Award, the highest award in Mexican cinema, because there weren't enough votes.

This Wednesday everything changed. After protests from some sectors about some categories having only three or four participants, instead of the traditional five, the AMACC (for its acronym) reconsidered and decided to include those who, in its view, had been left out of the top spots.

This is how Rooney Mara, The American actress who has been nominated twice for an Oscar ("Carol" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"), made it to the final list thanks to his work in the drama "La cocina" by Alonso Ruizpalacios.

In the film, which co-stars Raúl Briones ("Club de Cuervos") and is now available on Max streaming, she plays the girlfriend of the male character, an undocumented Mexican immigrant in New York, and she's also pregnant.

Rooney is in the same quintet as the experienced Luisa Huertas ("They Shall Not Move Us"), Adriana Paz ("Dead Man's Ring"), Fiona Palomo ("A Bad Actor") and Naian González Norvind ("Corina").

This is not the first time a foreign actress has sought the Mexican award. The most recent case occurred in 2007, when it was won by Spaniard Maribel Verdú for her work in "Pan's Labyrinth," tying with Mexican Elizabeth Cervantes for "More Than Anything in the World."

An email convinced her to work in The Kitchen

Rooney is the sister of fellow actress Kate Mara ("Brokeback Mountain" and "Iron Man 2"). She is 40 years old. Her entry into "The Kitchen" came when she received an email from Mexican filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalacios. offered him a character for his new film. The message came along with the feature films that Ruizpalacios had directed ("Güeros" and "Museo").

"She chooses her projects and knows this one would be done out of passion, not money. I thought of her when I was writing and got her email. The character had to be American because the film talks about the relationship between Mexico and the US. ", the director recalled at the time.

The film was shot secretly on a soundstage in Mexico City. Not because Rooney asked for it, but because his own personality has always required him to stay away from crowds and fame.

Shortly after, he worked with Guadalajara native Guillermo del Toro on "Nightmare Alley," adding to his filmography, which includes films such as "The Social Network" and "Pan: Journey to Neverland."

Joaquin Phoenix, who played the Joker in 2019 and 2024, got engaged to Rooney Mara in 2019, and they married in a secret wedding in 2020. Secrecy has been part of the hallmark of their romance. He has two children, the first born in 2020 and named River in honor of Joaquin's late brother.
