The Colombian National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) has provided a series of recommendations to ensure citizens have peace of mind and confidence that they are providing their information to an official pollster and thus avoid becoming victims of fraud or identity theft . How can you protect yourself from being scammed?

The agency responsible for producing Colombia's official statistical information reminded that census takers will always be properly identified with a vest and cap bearing the corresponding logos and the initials DANE in fuchsia, in addition to carrying a card with their personal information. Citizens have the right to disbelieve census takers; therefore, DANE staff are required to identify themselves. Likewise, those with any questions can call the central DANE citizen service line: (+57 601) 5978300.

The agency also emphasized that all relevant information regarding the national census and census takers' data can be verified through the official website (www.dane.gov.co) in the "Authorized Surveyors" section. DANE recommends not providing personal or financial information if the survey taker does not meet these conditions, and also recommends reporting any suspicion of fraud or identity theft.

Why is DANE issuing a warning?

The initiative arises in response to growing concerns about security in the data collection process, and its main objective is to generate confidence in households and establishments when providing their information. It is important to emphasize that the national census will provide an updated assessment of formal and informal economic activity in the country's different cities, information that is crucial for designing more effective public policies and directing social investment toward those most in need.
