IECM abandons its role as electoral referee and demonstrates institutional intolerance: Nora Arias

PRD CDMX representative Nora Arias rejected a statement from the Electoral Institute of Mexico City ( IECM ) , which she said represents an unjustified attack on her membership.
"We categorically reject the content and tone of the statement issued by the Mexico City Electoral Institute ( IECM ), which represents an unjustified, disproportionate, and biased attack against our membership ," he said.

Nora Arias lamented that the IECM is acting with positions with "clear political overtones," which should not exist and should act as an electoral referee.
"We deeply regret that an institution that must act with foresight is willing to issue statements with clear political overtones, abandoning its duty to act as an electoral arbiter and guarantor of the democratic principles that govern our public life.
"The IECM cannot and should not become a political actor. It is its responsibility to listen, be accountable, and guarantee the principles of certainty, legality, and objectivity," stated Representative Nora Arias Contreras.

The Mexico City representative also maintained that attempting to silence criticism from the parliamentary platform with offensive statements only demonstrates profound institutional intolerance.
"As a representative of the People's Party, I have pointed out, using legal and political arguments, what we consider to have been questionable actions by some of the Institute's advisory bodies, particularly in relation to the process of ruling on the PRD's registration in Mexico City.
"These observations have been made within the framework of the law, with respect and with the firm conviction of defending the political and electoral rights of thousands of citizens who continue to believe in the democratic project represented by the PRD CDMX ," he explained.
Furthermore, Arias Contreras commented that the IECM "must not forget that its function is not to silence critical voices, nor to adopt positions that fuel polarization or political persecution."
"Pluralism and debate are pillars of democracy, and when attempts are made to discredit those who demand transparency and legality, the electoral function is violated," he reiterated.
