Rome rediscovers the Tiber: the new Foro Italico Overlooking Park is born

Rome is an eternal city, but also in constant ferment. And in particular it is in this 2025, a year that has seen the birth of new public works that undoubtedly enhance the (already) very precious Capital, going beyond the simple aesthetic restyling.

A concrete example of this is the new Foro Italico Overlooking Park , which is reflected in the Tiber and represents one of the most successful expressions of the urban regeneration plan linked to the Jubilee. It is the tangible demonstration of how Rome is setting up a slow but real renewal of the relationship with its river, too long reduced to a backdrop.

Where it is and what to know about the Foro Italico Overlooking Park

Located between Ponte Milvio and Ponte Duca d'Aosta, the new park extends for 1.6 hectares along the Tiber floodplain, right next to the Foro Italico sports complex. An area that for decades has remained semi-abandoned, and which today presents itself as an open and lively space with natural paving, green areas, panoramic terraces, seats, evening lighting and a travertine staircase that finally reconnects the Lungotevere and the quay.

The project, financed with 2 million euros by Rome Capital as part of the works for the Jubilee 2025 , does not limit itself to restoring decorum to a neglected area, but gives it a new meaning. You can come to these parts to train with the fitness equipment (already tested by athletes of the Italian national team), to run along the Tiber or to simply stop and watch the river, sitting on a bench in the shade.

But this park is also an invitation to explore, both as a citizen and a tourist. You start from Ponte Milvio, historic and lively, full of bars and urban life, and from there you descend to the repainted terraces and let yourself be carried along the river. In a few minutes you can reach Acqua Acetosa, or head north, cross the Flaminio neighborhood, stop at the MAXXI or the Auditorium Parco della Musica.

Rome reconnects with its river

The Foro Italico Overlooking Park is not an isolated work. It is the fifth and last of the “overlookings” planned by Rome Capital for the Jubilee, together with those already built in Ostia Antica , Lungotevere delle Navi , Prati dell'Acqua Acetosa and Ponte Milvio itself. All these interventions are part of the so-called Tiber Masterplan , a strategic project that aims to transform the river into a “green and blue” infrastructure: no longer an urban boundary, but a backbone of ecological, social and landscape connection.

During the inauguration of the park, which took place on June 18, 2025, Mayor Roberto Gualtieri explicitly spoke of “reconnecting the city to the Tiber.” And if this type of declaration often risks remaining in the realm of rhetoric, here instead it has materialized.

In this regard, Councilor Sabrina Alfonsi stated: “The Foro Italico Overlooking Park will integrate the network of other parks already inaugurated by Roma Capitale and the pre-existing ones of Marconi and Magliana, to which will be added the Tevere Sud park that the Superintendence is creating and Tiberis, which we are transforming from a seasonal beach into a permanent park. With the strategic Masterplan of the Tiber this Administration aims to redevelop the urban stretch of our river, renaturalizing the banks and restoring nature. We are reconnecting the green and blue infrastructure of our Capital, to make it a more sustainable, liveable and healthy metropolis”.
