European Surgical Association, Manzini's presidency ends

It concludes with the 31st Congress annual, scheduled in Geneva from 2 to 3 May, the mandate biennial presidency of the European Surgical Association Nicolò de Manzini, director of the Surgical Clinic of the University of Trieste and former director of the Department of Medical, surgical and health sciences. Founded in 1993 - explains the Julian university - ESA brings together some of the most authoritative figures in European surgery and world-wide and aims to promote scientific excellence, disseminate research results and promote dialogue interdisciplinary. During the term of Professor de Manzini, "the association has continued to distinguish itself for its high scientific level of the activities promoted, including the presentation of 45 scientific works", "intended for the publication in one of the most authoritative magazines in the sector". Among the initiatives promoted by de Manzini is also the opening of the association to young professors and researchers in surgery, with the creation of the Next Generation Esa. One way, says de Manzini, to create "a bridge and a springboard for international academic careers". For the future, according to de Manzini, research must not focus "only on new therapeutic protocols", but also on the sustainability of the surgery at the economic and environmental level, "in a system health system where unfortunately the resources are well defined". "Operating rooms are expensive and produce a lot of carbon dioxide and an impressive amount of waste", he recalls. Objective The final goal is to make surgery "sustainable and fair for all" everyone". The hope, he concludes, is that ESA can "continue on this line of research development. With my successor, coming from the UK, we have already been working together for months".
