Edison, agreement with Verdalia Bioenergy for the collection of agricultural biomethane for transport

Edison has announced the start of a long-term agreement with Verdalia Bioenergy , an Italian operator in the agricultural biomethane sector, for the exclusive withdrawal of biomethane produced by Verdalia 's portfolio of seven plants, located in the province of Brescia. The agreement provides that the entire production capacity of these plants, equal to approximately 14 million cubic meters per year, will be allocated to the transport sector.
The biomethane withdrawn by Edison is produced by treating approximately 350,000 tons per year of livestock effluents and agricultural by-products not intended for human consumption. Verdalia plans to increase the production capacity of these plants by more than 50% in the coming years, thanks to the planned investments.
“The agreement with Verdalia Bioenergy is an important piece of our strategy that aims to increase the share of green gas in the portfolio, with a view to increasingly decarbonized energy production,” commented Andrea Qualiano , Head of Green Gas Origination & Gas Supply Portfolio Decarbonization at Edison. “With this collaboration, we strengthen our position on the Italian and European green gas market, particularly in the transport sector, traditionally hard to abate, confirming our role as a responsible operator committed to supporting its customers in their decarbonization journey, through increasing shares of green gas, such as biomethane and bioLNG”.
The agreement provides that Edison will purchase the entire biomethane production of Verdalia for a period of up to 10 years . At the same time, Edison will also provide the electricity and gas necessary for the operation of the plants, promoting an integrated and sustainable approach to the entire energy supply chain.
Biomethane is one of the pillars of the European energy transition, as highlighted in the REPowerEU plan, which aims to increase its production tenfold by 2030, reaching 35 billion cubic meters per year. Its environmental benefits include the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the valorization of organic waste and the support of the circular economy.
“This agreement with Edison allows Verdalia Bioenergy to streamline and optimize its downstream activities by centralizing the management of shipping, sales and supply activities for our current operating plants under a single contractual framework,” said Cristiano Campi , Chief Commercial Officer of Verdalia Bioenergy. “This allows Verdalia to focus on its core mission: building and operating plants and producing biomethane, bioCO2 and biofertilizers with the ambition to be best in class in the sector in Europe.”
Edison is one of the main Italian operators in the biomethane sector, with a share of approximately one third of the national market. The group is actively engaged in a long-term strategy that integrates production, procurement and marketing of green energy to serve the energy transition of its customers.
