Cassano d'Adda (Milan), July 2, 2025 - "Temperatures above the norm in the production shed: risk of heat stress and heat-related illnesses", and the workers cross their arms. Two hours of picket in the early morning, under the banners of Fiom Cgil and Fim Cisl, at Emmegi spa in via Newton in Cassano d'Adda, a historic company that produces heat exchangers and has a second location in Slovakia as well as numerous foreign branches.

Anti-heat ordinance: now it's signed. What happens to those who don't respect it?

The "hot" negotiation has been going on for quite some time, eight hours of strike had already been carried out, another two hours remain in the package, "they will be planned according to the will or unwillingness - according to the unions - of the company to finally open a serious and decisive discussion on investments, work and health".

About forty of the ninety total employees , all from the production department, participated in the picket. "The thermometer speaks clearly - said Andrea Rosafalco, Fiom Cgil delegate - , in recent days the temperature in the workplace has exceeded 35 degrees and touched peaks of over 36. There are two air conditioning systems in the warehouse but for production needs, nothing for the workers. We made some proposals, they were not accepted. There is no will"

The discussion had started early, an initial phase of negotiations on a possible summer schedule had not produced an agreement. “Three weeks ago we had a meeting, and we still noted the absence of a structural plan on the heat . No investment, no measures, on this issue as well as, for that matter, on others related to energy and modernization. Here, most of the operators are over fifty: it is even harder, and it is even more risky”. “In 2025 - as stated in a flyer signed by the trade unions and the Emmegi RSU - those who strike at Emmegi lose money not to get more, but so that the company invests in preventing accidents and damage to health”.

The company's response

“The company has carried out measurements according to which the temperature in the spaces in question is 32 degrees on average, and does not reach 34 in any case. Now we have commissioned new surveys, we will have the reports - so says the Cfu of Emmegi Giuseppe Esposito - . But as far as we are concerned, and given that it is certainly hot, we are within the norm".

On the negotiation. “ The heat is there for everyone, but not everyone has adopted the line of confrontation. Fiom asks for air conditioners or ventilation systems, but there are objective technical problems, production would be affected, and we have explained this clearly. This strike has something of a specious nature”. Finally: “We are a historic company with historic employees, who we have kept over the years. We have always recognized everything including the superminimums, we listen to the requests, we put ourselves in the shoes of those who work and we are adopting measures to limit the inconvenience: more cannot be done".
