The Railway Curve. Behind the billboards is the ditch.
La Spezia, November 9, 2025 – The 53-year-old La Spezia fan who fell from the railings of the Curva Ferrovia and into the ditch below during the second half of the Spezia-Bari match is hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Sant'Andrea Hospital in La Spezia, in serious but stable condition. Initial tests upon arrival at the hospital revealed a fractured pelvis and parietal skull.
The man, originally from Val di Magra , underwent further diagnostic tests yesterday, and his condition is being continuously monitored by medical staff in the intensive care unit. The 53-year-old was immediately rescued by several home fans with first aid experience, who jumped into the ditch to help their friend. Firefighters and Red Cross personnel then arrived, and the man was transported to Sant'Andrea Hospital in critical condition.
Messages of solidarityNumerous messages of solidarity have been posted, including those on social media from Spezia Calcio . The incident has brought to the forefront the need to fill in the ditch separating the pitch from the Curva Ferrovia. "This ditch has been highlighted for years as useless, anachronistic, and above all dangerous for fans and players," wrote fans belonging to the 'New Spezia Stadium' group. "The ditch in front of the Curva Ferrovia must be removed." CEO Andrea Gazzoli had already considered this project, considering that today, with modern monitoring technologies, safety is still ensured. This is also evidenced by the examples in other sections of the stadium, where there is no ditch and nothing happened, except for the pitch invasion that occurred in 2022 by Neapolitan fans during the Spezia-Napoli Serie A match.
Currently, there are no plans from La Spezia, which has already invested heavily in the stadium, nor from the Municipality. In addition to the financial aspect, technical considerations must be taken into account, primarily related to water drainage. Currently, the club is only planning to submit a feasibility study for a road change that will allow the pedestrianization of a portion of Viale Fieschi adjacent to the stadium, with construction costs borne by the Municipality.
