Interview With Louth Captain From 2022 Goes Viral After He Proves The Doubters Wrong

When Sam Mulroy was in the Hogan Stand holding the Delaney Cup aloft on Sunday afternoon, a lifetime ambition had been realised.
It would take a brave person now to say Mulroy does not belong among the GAA's elite forwards but three years ago he received plenty of backlash for his strong self-belief.
When Mulroy appeared on The BBC's The GAA Social podcast he was widely mocked for his comments about being the best forward in Louth and wanting to win Leinster titles with Louth.
Speaking on the podcast in March 2022, Sam Mulroy received plenty of criticism for daring to say: "All I ever wanted to be was the best in Louth or the best in Ireland."
Mulroy said it was his S&C coach Graham Byrne that inspired this drive in him.
You can whinge about being from Louth or you can go and be the best in Louth.
I went home and wrote that on my whiteboard in my room and it was ‘I am the best forward in Louth’. It’s there ever since. It hasn’t moved.
Every day when I wake up it’s there and I have a look at it and even now when I wake up and people say, ‘You’re the best forward in Louth’ or ‘You’re top scorer in Ireland’, I know that and I know I am and I’ve know that the last five years, whether I was or I wasn’t.

Sam Mulroy backs up his claims three years onThere can be no doubting Sam Mulroy's bona fides following his man-of-the-match performance on Sunday. He not only scored 1-7 and the decisive two-pointer on Sunday but also captained Louth to their first Leinster championship since 1957.
To put that into context, Elvis Presley's "Let Me Be Your Teddy Bear" was top of the charts the last time Louth won the Delaney Cup.
Speaking on this week's edition of The GAA Social podcast, Oisín McConville said of Mulroy's appearance on the show.
He took a decent bit of a stick after that and that's because people aren't used to hearing lads talking like that. But he's continued to back that up and the thing I liked about him today was that he shot a few wides but see in the big moments when you need someone to step up he stepped up.
McConville believes Sam Mulroy was very brave to be so forthcoming in expressing his self-belief
You have to have ambition first and foremost but see when you voice it and you say it out loud you can't take that back. He couldn't take that back and it probably drove him even harder to where he ended up today.
2025 has already been a memorable year for Louth and Sam Mulroy, with the All-Ireland series up next for them how far can Ger Brennan's men go?
He and Louth will now take on Clare, Monaghan and Down in their All-Ireland group where they'll be hoping to build on Sunday's result and keep their season alive.
