An exhibition to relive the glory days of Sporting Toulon

We're talking about a time that those under forty can't possibly know... And yes, in Toulon, land of rugby, the round ball certainly played a leading role. While Sporting has been stuck for years in National 2 – the equivalent of the 4th division – it played in the national elite three times in the second half of the 20th century.
This is the story that can currently be (re)discovered at the town hall on the port, during an exhibition put together by nostalgic and passionate supporters, with the help of the municipality's cultural department.
" We decided to focus the presentation on the three promotions to the first division," explains Manu, a Sporting "ultra" who is frantically documenting the history of his beloved club. "The last one, which many Toulon residents remember, was in the early 1980s. But also the other two in 1959 and 1964. "
Pieces of Toulon historySelected from hundreds of prints, the photos on display each tell a story. A decisive moment on the pitch, a scene of jubilation in a locker room, a communion with the fans... They all serve to measure the enthusiasm the club has generated in the city and allow veterans to share these fragments of Toulon history with new generations.
In the images, seasoned football fans will also come across some familiar faces, as the Azure and Gold jersey has been worn by iconic players (Delio Onnis, Pascal Olmeta, Bernard Casoni, Christian Dalger, Luigi Alfano to name but a few...).
And because football would be nothing without supporters, a second room allows you to discover a few "relics." From the traditional Panini sticker album to scarves and match programs, it's enough to really get a taste of a city's passion for yellow and blue. A passion that hasn't disappeared, the last diehards assure us. Simply dormant, waiting for better days...
Opening this Saturday from 11 a.m. at the town hall, in the presence of former players. On the same day, supporters also offer: 1:30 p.m.: buffet aperitif at the L'Occasione restaurant (103 bd Bazeilles) 6 p.m.: Sporting-Cannes, at the Bon-Rencontre stadium (read in the sports pages). 9 p.m.: concert at the Seynois site of the Bière de la rade (138 montée Batterie de la Montagne).
The exhibition is titled "Sporting's 85th Anniversary," even though the club is currently preparing festivities to celebrate its... 80th anniversary. Why the difference? The club has always focused its communications on the year 1945. That year actually corresponds to its first entry into a national competition. But the club's founding (or rather, the name change from "Sporting Club du Temple" to "Sporting Club de Toulon") dates back to October 30, 1940, during the war. The official letter establishing this name is on display at the honorary town hall.
