A cargo plane crashed Tuesday, November 4, shortly after taking off from Louisville Airport in the east-central United States, causing a spectacular fire and the deaths of at least 13 people, according to the governor of Kentucky. "UPS Flight 2976 crashed at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time," the FAA stated. The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 operated by the American carrier UPS, was bound for Hawaii.
The plane was carrying three crew members, according to a statement from the carrier UPS. But the victims were not limited to the flight crew: several people were in the path of the aircraft, which came to a stop about five kilometers from the airport, destroying several buildings along its route.
