It's true to say that Gustavo Petro is a figure who inspires both love and hatred. Throughout his long political career, the current President of the Republic has managed to earn the credibility of a large portion of the Colombian population, but he has also earned many detractors, whether for his political discourse, personal life, or controversial statements.
On this last topic, the head of state has been the subject of renewed discussion, following a comment made at the most recent cabinet meeting, in which he described men called Brayan as " vampires who abuse women ."

" Boys lost in life, I call them Brayans. In every working-class neighborhood there's a Brayan who takes women to who knows where, and then leaves them pregnant and abandoned. One of the biggest problems in Colombia and Bogotá is pregnant women. Brayans are vampire men because in society there are vampire men and women, greedy, who don't protect women and their offspring ," the head of state said this Monday.
The President's statement was not well received on social media, where thousands of users did not hide their outrage, especially those named Brayan .

One of them was Brayan Mantilla , an internet content creator known as 'El Brayan' , who, in response, made a video in the company of several people of the same name, in which he read a statement rejecting the comments of the head of state.
" We at the Brayan Association of Colombia inform the Presidency of the Republic that we're fed up: for years we've been unfairly singled out, turned into memes, and denied the right to be taken seriously in our work and personal lives, " he said.
After the reading, his colleagues, who claimed to have the same name, intervened in an orderly manner, commenting on what they are working on in order to refute what the president said at the Council of Ministers .
" I'm Brayan, and I'm a nurse, a mechanical engineer, a teacher, a photographer, and a business administrator. As you can see, there are Brayans of all kinds. Brayan workers, Brayan dreamers, Brayans fighting for a better future. We are not guilty of the name our parents gave us ," they say in the footage.
The recording ends with the 'Brayans' demanding " decent treatment for all Brayans, the right to not have our name be synonymous with a cheap joke. Finally, that 'National Brayan Day' be declared, with a holiday included, because respect is also worth celebrating. For a country with more Brayans and fewer prejudices ."
