It's not enough to simply trust an official channel, as sometimes apps have slipped through the App Store and Google Play filters but are harboring powerful malware.
And that's why we need to be very careful with the apps we download. The latest study by Integral Ad Science indicates that up to 2.5 million dangerous apps are installed every month. Once you download them for the first time, the damage is already done, but there are a series of warnings that will help keep you safe.
The new threat that thousands of users are facing has been dubbed " Kaleidoscope " because it is constantly transforming to evade detection and analysis.
Cybercriminals install apps that don't contain malicious code from the Google Play Store. They then distribute malicious copies through third-party app stores. Ads for these copies reach users through social media or other channels that appear legitimate.
Attackers exploit advertisers' lack of control, unaware that their ad campaigns are reaching infected phones en masse. " The malicious app serves intrusive, out-of-context ads , disguised as the benign app ID, in the form of full-screen interstitial images and videos, which are triggered even without user interaction."
Google confirms it has removed the flagged apps from the Play Store and maintains that Play Protect will address user security against known versions of the threat. This is, however, an issue involving sideloading , the installation of apps or software on a device from a third-party source.
The advice is firm and will help you stay safer: if you're one of those people who downloads apps locally, you should review the list of infected apps and delete any you recognize.
