RANKED: The best universities in Spain in 2026

With over 80 universities, Spain increasingly attracts foreign students for the quality of life and education. New rankings have revealed the so-called 'best' in Spain - here they are.
Foreigners are increasingly coming to Spain to study, drawn by the lifestyle, quality universities and (depending where you're from) comparatively cheap tuition.
Spain has 96 universities, 50 of which are public. Though many students choose a specific university for the course, location, or personal considerations, many prospective students look at which are considered 'best' or 'worst'.
A recent ranking has attempted to do this, with the CYD 2026 Ranking listing the top universities in Spain.
The ranking analysed 84 institutions and over 3,900 degree programmes, assessing various criteria such as teaching quality, research, graduate employment and 'internationalisation.'

The 10 best universities in Spain
Catalonia and Madrid dominated the rankings but didn't take the top spot overall. In total six universities from Barcelona and three from the capital feature in the Top 10, along with a few smaller but prestigious institutions that aren't so well known outside Spain.
The ranking is as follows:
- University of Navarra.
- Carlos III University of Madrid | Autonomous University of Barcelona.
- Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona.
- Autonomous University of Madrid.
- Ramon Llull University.
- International University of Catalonia.
- University of Barcelona.
- Polytechnic University of Catalonia | Comillas Pontifical University.
- University of Valencia - Estudi General.
- Rovira i Virgili University.
CYD doesn't only list the best universities in Spain but also breaks down their performance across different criteria. The report analysed six dimensions: teaching, research, graduate employment, knowledge transfer, international outlook and contribution to regional development.

In the first of these, it focused on the quality of teaching, academic success and student support, where the University of Madrid (Carlos III) and the Pontifical University of Comillas stood out.
The University of Valencia leads the way in the research category, followed in second place by the universities of Navarra, Cantabria and Lleida.
Two public universities also lead in the area of 'international orientation'. The University of Madrid (Carlos III) and the University of Barcelona (Autònoma), sharing the honours with the University of Navarra and Rovira i Virgili. In terms of contribution to regional development, the University of the Basque Country and the University of Lleida stand out.
