Eight cases of screwworm confirmed in humans in Mexico

The Ministry of Health (Ssa) confirmed this Tuesday, June 3, the existence of 8 cases of screwworm myiasis in humans. in Chiapas and Campeche, among which there are 4 men and 4 women, from 44 to 86 years of age.

According to the latest epidemiological bulletin, in week 21, corresponding to May 18-24, there were six cases: three men and three women in Chiapas, and two cases in Campeche: one man and one woman.

The report indicates that, in the case of Chiapas , the infections occurred in Mapastepec, on the head of a 77-year-old woman and on the head of a 74-year-old man; in a 50-year-old man from Huixtla, who presented the infection in his left leg; in Tapachula, on the head of a 44-year-old woman; in Escuintla, on both legs of an 83-year-old woman; and in Pijijiapan, on the head of a 67-year-old man.

In Campeche , an 86-year-old woman with a head infection has been reported in the municipality of Candelaria; and in Ciudad del Carmen, a 63-year-old man has also been reported with a head infection.

Of the total cases, in the four corresponding to Mapastepec, Huixtla and Tapachula, in Chiapas, and Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, the patients have already been discharged due to improvement after being hospitalized.

The rest, which includes four other cases, in Escuintla, Mapastepec, Pijijiapan, in Chiapas, and Candelaria, in Campeche, remain hospitalized or receiving outpatient treatment for improvement and stability.
