SPEI outages this Tuesday, August 12; transfers and payments affected

Tuesday morning began with frustration for thousands of bank users in Mexico. What seemed like a normal financial day turned into a series of massive complaints on social media and forums after the Interbank Electronic Payment System (SPEI) experienced failures that affected transfers from BBVA and BanCopel.
According to Downdetector data, 95% of reports focused on problems making transfers, while the remaining 5% were related to payment failures. Account holders reported that transactions remained "in process" without confirmation, or simply could not be initiated from the mobile app or online banking.
In BBVA's case, 74% of complaints were related to mobile banking issues, 15% to difficulties logging in, and 11% to problems completing transfers. Some users even reported that the system would automatically log them out minutes after logging in.
Although BBVA has yet to issue an official statement, BanCopel did confirm interruptions in receiving SPEI transfers and assured that its technical team is working to restore service as soon as possible.
On platforms like X (formerly Twitter), dozens of users shared screenshots and messages of frustration. “I need to make an urgent payment and SPEI isn't working,” wrote one user, while others complained about possible additional charges due to delays in their transactions.
This incident not only highlights users' high dependence on digital banking services, but also the importance of having alternative channels for urgent transactions. SPEI outages, although rare, can have significant impacts on personal and business transactions.
