Fonacot credit scam alert: signs of fraud and where to report it

In recent weeks, the National Workers' Consumption Fund ( Fonacot ) has detected a worrying increase in fraud committed by individuals posing as its employees.
These so-called managers promise to "streamline" credit processes, increase approved amounts, or even reduce outstanding balances, but all in exchange for deposits into bank accounts that have nothing to do with the institution.
In response to fraud cases, Fonacot stated that it does not request money in advance, does not request documents via WhatsApp, or send contracts for signature via text message. "Any official procedure should be done only through our branches or online platforms," the agency emphasized.
According to official information, fraudsters contact their victims through phone calls, WhatsApp messages, or social media posts. In some cases, they even distribute flyers or cards offering help in "unlocking" loans.
Their method is usually the same: they request personal information, copies of voter ID cards, and, above all, deposits for supposed administrative expenses. Once they receive the money, they disappear.
Fonacot warns that fake pages and profiles are also circulating online that appear to be official accounts. The only valid ones are:
- Facebook : Fonacot.oficial
- X (Twitter) : @Fonacot_oficial
To identify a fake manager, the institution recommends paying attention to the following signs:
- They ask you for deposits to release or manage a loan.
- They request personal documents via WhatsApp or email.
- They offer to settle debts with discounts in exchange for transfers.
- They use telephone numbers other than the official one: 55 88 74 74 74.
If you have fallen for this type of fraud, Fonacot indicates that it is key to act immediately:
- File a complaint with the nearest Prosecutor's Office or Attorney General's Office.
- Save all possible evidence: screenshots, deposit receipts, messages, and emails.
- Submit a copy of the complaint to the nearest Fonacot branch.
In this regard, Fonacot insists that loans and payments should be processed only at official branches or through its website, where secure bank references are generated for deposits. Any other method or intermediary puts your money and personal information at risk.
