Ceasefire with Pakistan: India reopens 32 airports

After India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire that appears to be holding, India reopened 32 airports.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced today that passenger traffic has resumed at the hubs of Srinagar, Chandigarh, and Amritsar. Effective immediately, flights to the airports in Jaisalmer, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Adhampur, Ambala, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Halwara, Hindon, Jammu, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali (Bhuntar), Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Thousand Island, and Uttarlai are also permitted. However, passengers are advised to check current flight times with their airlines beforehand.

Airports closed due to fighting

The airports in northern, western, and central India were closed on May 7th, initially until May 15th, following heavy fighting between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir region. The reason was a terrorist attack on Indian tourists in Kashmir that left numerous dead. The Indian government suspected Pakistan's military government of supporting the terrorists.

The airport closures hit Indian airlines particularly hard. Low-cost carrier IndiGo Airlines announced special flights to repatriate stranded passengers. Air India also confirmed it would resume flights from its hubs in Srinagar, Chandigarh, and Amritsar.
