3:00 p.m.: Welcome to the live ticker from FOCUS online. The newly formed women's national hockey team has kicked off the European Championship with the expected victory. One day after the German men's opening thriller, the women secured their first points of the European Championship with a commanding 4-1 victory against France in their first tournament under new Dutch coach Janneke Schopman, taking the first step toward the semifinals.
Today, the Mönchengladbach Hockey Park will see them face the favorites and record winners, the Netherlands. The defending champions won their first match against Ireland 2-0.
Schopman, who succeeded Valentin Altenburg in November 2024, had to assemble a new team following several retirements, including eight players aged 23 or younger, and eight players making their first appearances at a European Championship. However, the 48-year-old chose Julia Sonntag, the oldest player on the team, in goal.
The DHB team quickly lived up to its status as favorites against the French team, having already achieved a decisive 5-1 victory at the 2024 Olympics. After four missed penalty corners, the hosts played quickly and boldly forward.
It was then the European Championship debutants who took center stage, securing a quick 4-0 lead in the first half. Sara Strauss (13th minute), her Düsseldorf club colleague Sophia Schwabe (15th/24th), and Lena Micheel (22nd minute) scored. The French team then made it 1-4 through Eve Verzura.
