You can't get off to much better of a start. The previous Sunday, SV Drochtersen/Assel had defeated FC St. Pauli's U23 team 5-0, thus becoming the first team to top the table in the brand-new Regionalliga Nord season. For their current opponents, Kickers Emden, their opening match against SV Meppen ended in a narrow 0-1 home defeat, so the East Frisians were determined to at least do everything they could to avoid a completely false start in their difficult trip to the Kehdingen Stadium on Friday.
But Drochtersen/Assel simply continued where they left off in Hamburg on Friday. In the 5th minute, Kölle delivered a perfect cross from the right into the center of the penalty area. Wulff was there and headed in an unstoppable goal to make it 1-0. D/A continued to do a more than adequate job.
The next excitement came in the 24th minute. With consistent midfield pressing, the home side won possession and quickly switched gears. Elfers entered the penalty area, fell to the ground, and referee Wolff awarded a penalty. Hyseni took the penalty. Emden's keeper Quindt anticipated the corner, but the shot was well-placed and went in, making it 2-0. Kickers showed their courage and wanted to get back before the break. They succeeded: Schiller headed on a corner to make it 1-2 for East Frisia (37'). This score marked the halftime score of an intense and robust game.
Igwe sent offIn the second 45 minutes, the battle between two ambitious teams was tight for a long time. Emden had to enter the final phase with ten men. In the 84th minute, Igwe engaged Rosin in a high-intensity challenge in midfield, but instead of hitting the ball, he hit his opponent's heel, and was sent off with a second yellow card. A brief brawl broke out on the benches and on the pitch. This was hardly surprising, given that the hectic atmosphere had already been a feature of the evening.
SV D/A had the final word, and they could have sealed the deal earlier. Deep into stoppage time, the committed Emden side initially established a strong front foot, but after a long throw-in, home keeper Siefkes had to use all his skill to save a close-range header.
In return, Fernandes fired a cross from close range to make it 3-1. With this win, D/A now has six points and eight goals after two games.
