Promotion coach stays - HSV extends contract with Polzin early

HSV is moving into the future with Merlin Polzin. Two weeks before the first competitive match of the new season, the club prematurely extended the contract with the promoted coach and his coaching team.
The Bundesliga club did not disclose the term of the contract. "We are taking this step with full conviction," said sporting director Stefan Kuntz regarding the long-awaited decision. The contract of the 34-year-old, who led Hamburg back to the top flight last season after a seven-year absence, was due to expire next summer.
The contracts of Polzin's assistant coaches, Loic Favé and Richard Krohn, were also extended. They "have been doing outstanding work for HSV, not just since they took over as the professional coaching team," said Sporting Director Claus Costa.
"We will continue to give our all for the diamond every day."
HSV kicks off the season in two weeks with a DFB-Pokal match at FK Pirmasens (August 16). "Our message to the coaching staff and those around them is clear: we want to provide security and support for the challenges ahead," said Kuntz. He expects the Bundesliga to be "tough competition, in which we will inevitably encounter crises. We are ready to tackle this challenge sustainably together with Merlin, Loic, and Richi."
Polzin: "Strengthened again"Polzin, who was born in Hamburg, joined HSV as an assistant coach for the 2020/21 season and took over as head coach from Steffen Baumgart last November.
"HSV is, as everyone knows, the club in my hometown. Since my arrival at HSV, it has filled me with great pride to be able to wear the diamond on my chest," Polzin said of his contract extension. "We know firsthand what this club means to people and are therefore very happy to have been further strengthened by the management and committees in this constellation."
He and his team want to "reestablish HSV in the Bundesliga with our signature style. We approach this task with great humility and, at the same time, maximum ambition." The Hamburg team will kick off the Bundesliga season on August 24 with an away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
