DFB Cup: VfL Bochum knocks out FC Augsburg, penalty shootout at Millerntor

Coach Sandro Wagner and FC Augsburg suffered another blow in the DFB Cup against VfL Bochum. The 6-0 defeat against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga was followed just three days later by a 1-0 defeat against the second-division side – a catastrophe instead of a place in the round of 16!
Winger Gerrit Holtmann scored in the 39th minute for Bochum, who were flourishing under their new coach Uwe Rösler. Wagner provided a contrasting performance. The 37-year-old has reached a low point after four months as Bundesliga head coach. The pressure is mounting – and Borussia Dortmund visits the Augsburg Arena on Friday evening (8:30 p.m., Sky).
Thanks to goalkeeper Ben Voll, FC St. Pauli have reached the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal. The replacement for regular goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj saved two shots in the penalty shootout against Bundesliga rivals TSG Hoffenheim. The final score was 8-7 for Hamburg. Andrej Kramaric and Albian Hajdari were denied by Voll, and Mathias Pereira Lage failed to find the net for Hamburg. The score was 1-1 (1-0) after regular time and 2-2 (1-2) after extra time.
After less than 50 seconds, Hauke Wahl took the lead for the Kiezkickers. This had rekindled hopes of a successful revenge for the 3-0 Bundesliga defeat against the Kraichgau side nine days earlier. The visitors equalized with another lightning strike early in the second half. Grischa Prömel scored two minutes after the restart.
With a handball penalty that was at least questionable, Kramaric (107th minute) put the visitors ahead in extra time. Seconds before the end, Pereira Lage saved FC St. Pauli's penalty shootout, in which the hosts ultimately had the better nerve.
RB Leipzig easily advanced to the round of 16. Just like in the 6-0 win in Augsburg, the two-time cup winners were incredibly efficient at Energie Cottbus, beating the only third-division team remaining in the competition 4-1 (3-0).
A Leipzig fan died on the sidelines of RB Leipzig's cup match against third-division league leaders Energie Cottbus. The club announced this. "Tragically, a medical emergency occurred upon entry to the stadium without any external influence. We have just received the sad news that the RB Leipzig fan in question has passed away in the hospital," the two-time DFB Cup winner said in a statement.
In front of 19,700 spectators in the sold-out LEAG Energie Stadium – including 2,000 Leipzig fans – Johan Bakayoko gave Saxony an early lead in the 13th minute. Christoph Baumgartner doubled the lead in the 28th and 37th minutes. Ezechiel Banzuzi added another goal in the second half (59th minute). Cottbus' goal by substitute Erik Engelhardt was no longer significant in the 86th minute.
The struggling Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach made a much-needed statement in the DFB-Pokal. With a 3-1 (1-0) victory over second-division Karlsruher SC, the bottom-placed team in the Bundesliga advanced to the cup round of 16. Gladbach coach Eugen Polanski could breathe a sigh of relief after his first win in six matches.
Gladbach got off to the perfect start: Just moments after kickoff, Shuto Machino scored to make it 1-0 in the 3rd minute. And after the break, the hosts also scored quickly, this time through Nico Elvedi (51st minute). Fabian Schleusener (59th minute) managed to pull one back, but Haris Tabakovic put the final touch on the game with the final goal in the 89th minute.
