1. FC Köln and FC Bayern have faced each other six times in the DFB-Pokal, with the Munich club prevailing five times. However, Effzeh's moment struck once: over 50 years ago, Cologne swept Bayern away 5-1. Twenty-seven years later, the Rhinelanders took their bitter revenge: in 2003, Cologne lost 8-0 in the quarterfinals – thus not only losing the match but also ending a proud streak of 23 competitive matches without a loss.

Both teams have had strong starts to the current season. FC Bayern is the undisputed league leader and currently seems difficult to beat. Cologne are also in a good position after their return to the Bundesliga. After eight matchdays, FC Bayern Munich are in eighth place in the table – far from a relegation spot.

The first round of the cup, however, was bumpy. Cologne only avoided elimination against third-division Jahn Regensburg in stoppage time (2-1), after trailing at one point. Bayern Munich also had to tremble: third-division Wehen Wiesbaden spectacularly equalized from a 0-2 deficit before Harry Kane secured a 3-2 victory in stoppage time.
