The BLS surveys approximately 121,000 businesses and government agencies for its labor market report. The response rate has fallen from 80.3 percent in October 2020 to about 67.1 percent currently, according to BLS data. Staff reductions at the BLS have led to a reduction in the scope of data collection for calculating inflation. A July survey found that 89 out of 100 leading policy experts have at least some concerns about the quality of U.S. economic data, which provide an important basis for policymaking. Most of them are also concerned that government agencies are not addressing the issue with sufficient urgency.
